Death Circle Quiz Puzzle

There 100 people standing in a circle who are numbered 1 to 100 in order, with 1 standing between 100 and 2.

Person 1 is handed a gun, shoots Person 2 and hands the gun to Person 3. Person 3 shoots Person 4 and hands the gun to Person 5. This continues round and round the circle, with each person who receives the gun shooting the person on their left and then handing the gun to the person on the left of the person they have just shot.

Assuming the gun never runs out of bullets, what number person survives?

This is a simplified version of the Josephus Problem. In this case, it should be easy to see that person 1 is the only survivor when the number of people is a power of 2, so, for other numbers, you want to be the first person to shoot when the group size gets reduced to a power of 2. In this case, that means 64, so you need 36 people to be removed. Those 36 will be the even numbers from 2 to 72, so the next shooter will be number 73, who will be the last man standing at the end.

I think number 73 will survive.
