A statue at the University had been decorated by a drunken student returning from a Christmas party. There were four students at the party Lyle, Marks, Spencer and Tate, but there was no CCTV footage or any evidence as to which of the four was responsible.
Lyle had a reputation for this sort of behaviour, and he was summoned to answer questions about the night in question. He was finally told "As it is Christmas, tell me who is responsible and I will make the punishment more lenient, but if you don't tell me I will ensure that he is punished as severely as possible."
This presented Lyle with a dilemma - he did not want to inform on one of his friends, but he suspected that his identity would be discovered eventually, and wanted to save his fellow student from possible expulsion.
Eventually he responded "The perpetrator was born on the day of George W Bush's second inauguration."
After working out this date and checking the student records, no student was born on this date.
So who did do it?
