A local farmer employs a ploughman, a carter, a shepherd and a driver.
These four employees have the surnames Ploughman, Carter, Shepherd and Driver; however, none of them has a surname that matches their occupation.
To add to the confusion, each of these men has a son who assists one of the others. That is, no son assists his father. Neither do any of the four assist a man whose occupation matches the boy's surname.
The young Ploughman is engaged to the sister of the boy who helps the carter.
The carter is married to Mr Ploughman's sister.
Mr Shepherd is married to the ploughman's widowed mother..
Mr Driver has no daughters.
