Four teams played in a 5-a-side competition as part of a festival in the village near Quiz Master Shop Towers. They were United, Rovers, Rangers and Wanderers. In the old-fashioned way there were two points for a win, one point for a draw and no points for a loss.
It turned out that Rangers got five points, Rovers got three points and Wanderers got one point. Eleven goals in total were scored, of which Rovers scored five. And Rovers beat Wanderers by two goals to one.
What was the score in the game between Wanderers and Rangers?
To get three points Rovers must win one game, draw one game and lose one game, and they scored five goals. And we know they beat Wanderers 2-1, scoring two goals leaving a draw and a loss and three goals to score.
Their possible results are 0-0 & 3-4, 1-1 & 2-3, 2-2 & 1-2 or 3-3 & 0-1.
Rangers must win two games and draw one, and one of the wins must be over Rovers and the other must be by the score of 1-0. If they draw against Rovers they must win both other games and would score too many goals for the total to remain eleven.
The same argument shows that all the other games were drawn.
Thus Wanderers must have lost to Rangers and this is the match Rangers won 1-0.
