There has been great excitement in the village surrounding Quiz Master Shop Towers. Last week there was a shooting on the allotments and, of course, everyone is interested, and has a theory as to the perpetrator.
On the other hand, the police have used the tried and tested means, motive and opportunity, and think that they have their man. He is helping them with their enquiries, although they have not released any name yet.
It would appear that the main problem is the lack of a weapon, as an appeal for information has been put out. And last night a cryptic note was delivered anonymously to the police station. Under the words "six-sevenths of the work has been done" was the following grid:
Y U E O I S L WD L C T I A N F
O E I H E H V R
E U T R L E V N
E T M R E R D H
I S O R T W A S
Where is the gun?
The key to solving this puzzle is the "six-sevenths" above the grid. One-seventh, two-sevenths etc. have an unusual property - they are a revolving sequence of recurring decimals.
Write the following numbers alongside the grid of letters:
1 4 2 8 5 72 8 5 7 1 4
4 2 8 5 7 1
5 7 1 4 2 8
7 1 4 2 8 5
8 5 7 1 4 2
Then take the first, fourth, second etc. letters from the first line, the second, eighth, fifth letters from the second line, and so on, and you get:
Y O U W I LL F I N D T
H E R E V O
L V E R U N
D E R T H E
S T A I R S
You will find the revolver under the stairs.
